About Us

Surrey and Hampshire Family Therapy Training started life as a CAMHS project in the millennial year 2000. This was a time of huge expansion and modernisation of Children’s Mental Health Services at the time referred to as Child and Family Consultation. It was recognised that additional training and development was required to equip the expanding workforce with skills to work with families. A small needs analysis project was undertaken funded by the CAMHS grant and a need for a locally based training in family approaches was agreed. At the time SW Surrey and NE Hampshire CAMHS were delivering CAMHS as a single organisation. We appointed trainers to work in collaboration with CAMHS who provided us with corporate Support. Later Surrey and Hampshire CAMHS disaggregated delivering services along county boundaries. However, the model of the training we had established was continued with students from both counties and wider areas attending. We started with a Foundation Course that was accredited by the UK Association of Family Therapy (AFT) in 2005. In 2012 we developed an Intermediate programme gaining AFT accreditation in 2014. The model of independent delivery in partnership with NHS services has continued with the formation of Surrey and Hampshire Family Therapy Training Collaborative. Our model of partnership has worked successfully with five different NHS Organisations. Now in our 26th Year of delivering training we are pleased to be back with our second partner Surrey and Borders NHS Trust. As AFT accredited programmes an over-arching ethos is that of respect and inclusivity of race, class, culture, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, and religion. Throughout our programme emphasis is placed on developing self-reflexivity. The other key strand is the interlinking of theory and practice and applying the course learning to work settings. The course team and Students abide by AFT code of conduct and ethics. Throughout our journey we have been keen to develop local communities of systemic practice. We have developed close links with local Family Therapists, Systemic Practitioners and Supervisors. A strength of our programmes is that many of our students continue to live and work within Surrey, Hampshire, and the surrounding areas. We have encouraged our alumni to keep in touch and develop links and connections supporting learning through the training and beyond. We estimate that over the years we have supported over 350 students who will have gone on to support many families changing lives and relationships.
